In the latest episode of The Moon Files podcast, we spoke to the scientists who led the study of the Moon’s origin. As the podcast title says it, they explained that the theory of a moon-like spacecraft could be possible but it would be extremely difficult to explain how an asteroid ended up with the same sort of surface features. They did admit that it’s possible that the lunar maria could be similar to an asteroid, but they’re also quite sure that it’s quite unlikely.
As for the theories of how it originated, it’s likely that some other celestial body could have left a similar impact-like impact when it had been traveling through the asteroid belt for millions of years. I don’t think we’ll find any of those objects on the ground.
The most likely thing to happen is that when it came to the asteroid belt, we had a similar impact when we dropped the Earth off the edge of the moon’s orbit. But it doesn’t matter because the impact would have been more like a bomb than a space rock.
